Synopsis
The “Numbers Gangs” on the Cape Flats are among the most dangerous and violent in the world. The murder rate in this region is one of the highest in the world. It is a place riddled with violence and drugs. If you are born on the Cape Flats as a boy, chances are you will become a gang member. But there are some that make it out.

The Cape gangs appeal to young boys need to belong to something. Surfshack provides them an alternative "something" to belong to ... "Chasing The Dragon" is a juxtaposition between choosing two highs, chasing two fires ... that of taking drugs vs that of surfing in the ocean, and ultimately how Surfshack helps these kids replace the drugs with the surfing for a new high.

The idea is about the healing power of the ocean and how it can positively affect a child’s development and outlook on life regardless of their situation. Life on the Cape Flats (Cape Town’s infamous Ganglands) is bleak. Generations of oppression, suffering, violence and all that comes with it makes it a place that very few ever get out of. This is a true story about how the timeless art of surfing is helping young children from the Cape Flats find a new alternative to a life of Gangsterisim.
