EntrySummary
The opioid epidemic in the United States is claiming lives at a devastating pace. Last year more Americans died of drug overdose than died in the course of 22 years during the Vietnam War. Teenagers who try opioids have a much higher incidence of addiction later in life if they survive their teenage years. Currently, group therapy is the primary treatment option for opioid addiction, with an estimated 10-20 percent success rate. Opioid Use Disorder is a medical condition that requires medical treatment in order to stabilize the person suffering for as long as necessary to eliminate the physical and psychological cravings experienced by the user. "Hey, Charlie" raises awareness and combats stigma by showing that anyone - regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic background - can fall prey to addiction, and powerfully demonstrates that emotional support alone cannot stem this epidemic.
BriefExplanation
“Hey, Charlie” unfolds through the eyes of Charlie, a high school student-athlete, allowing the viewer to experience the progression of drug addiction from alcohol to prescription opioids to heroin overdose. We meet Charlie as a child picnicking with his parents on the day he names his puppy “Chloe”. As Mom spins Charlie he awakes from this dream-memory. Charlie, now 18, brushes his teeth, eats breakfast with his family and fully-grown dog Chloe, aces a test, wins his race, and meets his friends at a party where he meets a girl. Charlie attends a series of parties till one day a friend with a broken arm offers him a pill. The opioids take hold, grades suffer, parents grow increasingly desperate as Charlie becomes violent and isolated. Charlie progress to cheaper, powerful heroin, and overdoses. As Mom desperately tries to save him, fond memories pulse through Charlie’s mind as he drifts away.
