Synopsis
At Nest, we strive to create a home that takes care of the people inside it and the world around it. And when we launched the Nest Learning Thermostat six years ago, it helped us solidify the DNA of what every Nest thermostat will offer: energy savings, beautiful design, and simple usability. But we wondered, what if we could save even more energy around the world, by helping more customers experience the benefits that Nest thermostats provide? In August 2017, we launched the Nest Thermostat E – a product that expands our most well-known product portfolio with a new ID that quietly blends into your home. The Nest Thermostat E delivers on the premium design and simple functionality consumers expect from Nest at a more accessible price point, while retaining all of our energy-saving features. And it can pay for itself in less than two years.
Outcome
Our objective with the Nest Thermostat E has always been simple: to make energy savings more accessible to more people. By creating an advanced thermostat at a lower price, this has been made possible for tens of millions of users. The Nest Thermostat E is available across all channels –nest.com and our retail and energy partners across the United States and Canada. With energy provider programs and rebates, it can even be free for some households. Easily integratabtle with other Nest and Google products, the Nest Thermostat E provides all of the energy-saving intelligence and beautiful design that consumers have come to know and love.
Execution
The Nest Thermostat E pays homage to the classic Nest thermostat, but we’ve taken a simplified approach. We removed the complex screen elements and show only what’s necessary: the current temperature, the requested temperature, and two indicators. The Nest Thermostat E will also show clarifying text and icons when the system is performing additional functions. The Nest Thermostat E contains an industry first frosted display that helps it subtly blend into your home. It uses an ambient light sensor to determine the light in the room and adjusts the screen accordingly. Our LCD technology coupled with a custom polarized lens lets light out but not in, creating the visual effect that makes Nest Thermostat E appear frosted, while still retaining readability. Nest was also able to stay true to our mission by introducing recycled resin on the internal frame structure. We design our products as a full system, equally addressing the feature development, the physical interaction, the user interface, the app experience, and even details like the audio design. The Nest Thermostat E can be controlled anywhere with your phone, and it comes with a simple schedule right out of the box, allowing you to start saving on Day 1.

At Nest, we’re always listening to our consumers. And what we heard is that not everyone is interested in a bold, advanced piece of technology for their wall. In order to bring energy savings to as many homes as possible, we needed to create a product that was more simple and felt more accessible in look, feel, and price point. These customers want to save energy, but they don’t want technology for technology’s sake. So we created something that was softer, brighter, and warmer. We changed the user experience by making fonts larger, actionable items fewer, and control elements bolder. The Nest Thermostat E contains an extraordinary amount of intelligence and sophisticated engineering, but doesn’t draw attention to itself in the home. This is a product you’ll want to live with, every day, for a long time.
