Synopsis
DesignThinkers is Canada’s largest design conference, hosted for the last 18 years in Toronto by the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD). In 2017, DesignThinkers expanded for the first time to include Vancouver as a second host city. Additionally, DesignThinkers doubled in size, bringing speakers together from an increasingly diverse range of disciplines. To express this shift – and reach two markets with very different levels of brand recognition – the conference needed to be rebranded with an identity that could unify both events under a single theme – and could be activated over a long period of time with substantial impact and reach on social media.
Outcome
Hilary Ashworth, Executive Director of RGD reported a significant spike in the sharing of, and interaction with, the DesignThinkers identity on social media. She noted that “it has continued to be fresh and used in so many different ways” – allowing RGD to build momentum throughout the course of the 11 month campaign. In the end, the newly introduced Vancouver conference was able to attract nearly double the attendees anticipated pre-launch. "I love the logo because it brought together a central focus for the event” says Ashworth. "This is going to be a hard act to follow."
Execution
The design elements included: Name Badges: We developed over 2000 unique designs within the eye, so each and every speaker and attendee would receive a custom name badge representing their unique perspective. Web App: We created a mobile web app (RGDdoodle.com) allowing DesignThinkers delegates, and even those not attending the event, to draw and share their own unique design perspective on social. Event Guide: We printed an interactive event guidebook highlighting the notion of shifting your design perspective. On the front cover, we created a Magic Eye – a hidden image that is only revealed upon changing your perspective (essentially, relaxing and crossing your eyes). We also designed and printed a graphic on the edge of the book only revealed when you flip through the pages.
CampaignDescription
The single attribute shared by all DesignThinkers – whether they’re speakers or attendees in Toronto or Vancouver – is their unique design perspective. To uniformly frame these individual perspectives, we developed the eye. The eye, an iconic static logo on its own, is symbolic of the common thread between all visual designers. Much like the DesignThinkers stage, it is a singular place for infinite perspectives to be expressed – adapting in form and style to reflect new points of view.
