In just over 4 months, we created an immersive 360º experience that transports users to five unique National parks. Each park features a video intro, shot in 16:9 from land, air, and underneath the sea. Transitions from park to park are captured in Google Earth, showing the great distances between these amazing places.In each park, users can navigate to places of interest in a seamless blend of traditional 16:9 and full 360º video. In Kenai Fjords, users descend into an ice crevasse and kayak through one of its icy bays. In Hawai’i Volcanoes, users traverse a lava tube and stand on the edge of the island, on land recently formed by active lava flow. In Bryce Canyon, users can experience the full majesty of the night sky in one of the darkest places in North America, and ride horseback on the Peek-a-boo Loop Trail. In Carlsbad Caverns, users can watch thousands of bats soar overhead, and descend into a walking tour of Lower Cave. Finally, in Dry Tortugas, users can SCUBA dive a shipwreck and swim along a stunning coral reef. Some parks also feature interactive educational components. Users can navigate with sonar like the bats of Carlsbad Caverns, or see the yearly effect of climate on the glaciers of Kenai Fjords. They can also explore the night sky of Bryce Canyon, where galaxies millions of light years away can be seen. This experience is also the first to feature ambisonic audio, which mimics how humans hear in real life by mixing sound in 360º space. When you look around or move your body, the sound moves with you. The experience was also turned into a Google Expedition so that teachers could take their classrooms on their own field trip anytime, anywhere.

We wanted to use Google technology to expose people to the majesty of America’s National Parks. First, we chose five of the most unique and remote parks in the system to visit—Kenai Fjords in Alaska, Hawai’i Volcanoes in Hawai’i, Bryce Canyon in Utah, Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, and Dry Tortugas in Florida. With the parks selected, we set out to create an experience that not only brought the parks to life, but also allowed people to have experiences they couldn’t get in person. So, we worked with the people who knew these places best: park rangers.
